• There are so many different types of psychotherapy which one do I choose?
There has been much research done over the years on the effectiveness of the different types of psychotherapy available. There are Humanistic, Gestalt, Existentialists, Cognitive and Psychoanalytical psychotherapists to name but a few. Research is difficult to analyse owing to the many variables in therapeutic models and individual practice. The shorter term therapies are easier to quantify and so there is more evidence to support their efficacy. Recent thinking still points towards the relationship between the therapist and client as being the most important ingredient for a successful outcome rather than the orientation or tradition the psychological theory is based upon. For this reason you may want to telephone several different therapists or even meet with them to see which one feels right for you. First and foremost though it’s important to check out the qualifications.
