• Why do people go to Psychotherapy or Counselling?
There is more information on the psychotherapy and counselling page as to what symptoms bring people into therapy.
In some circles there can be a perceived stigma in admitting you’re seeing a therapist. The idea is that only people who are mentally ill or suffering a diagnosed condition would need to go. There is a growing recognition however that therapy can increase self awareness and in so doing enable a person to live a fuller life. Some of the more progressive organisations now see psychotherapy and counselling as an important part of a wellbeing package that can support staff in a job which has a high level of challenge.
From the individual perspective people are choosing to come to therapy not just to heal old hurts but to reflect on and explore who they are, what values they hold, what direction they want to take and how that might give their life meaning and purpose?
